Operational amplifiers are widely used in the analog signal conditioning chain. Some of the examples are signal up/down scaling, active filters, buffers and drivers. The amplifier topology and the required design effort depend highly on the application and the required specifications. Many parameters like speed, power consumption, noise, offset, area consumption, input/output voltage range, load drive, supply voltage and production test time must be considered.
This seminar will guide the participants step by step through the design of the integrated amplifiers. Starting with the basic operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) configurations the drawbacks and limitations of OTAs will be discussed. More advanced circuits will be introduced to improve the gain, input and output voltage range, Common Mode Rejection Ratio (CMRR), Power Supply Rejection Ratio (PSRR), load drive capability and offset of the amplifier. The negative feedback is the most powerful technique to control the important parameters. Most of the presented circuits use feedback to improve the overall accuracy. Finally the design of current and voltage references will be discussed. The biasing current of the amplifier has significant impact on the overall performance. Several topologies and circuits will be presented.

Der Referent:
Mr. Wickmann received the Dipl.-Ing. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany, in 2008. From 2008 to 2012, he was with Texas Instruments GmbH, Germany, where he has been an analog design engineer, developing 16-bit SAR A/D converts and isolated amplifiers for current shunt measurement applications. In 2012 he joined eesy-ic GmbH, Germany, where he has been involved with the design of low-voltage, low-power analog circuits. Mr. Wickmann received 3 patents regarding the circuit design of data converters and published several technical papers. Since 2011 Mr. Wickmann holds lecture “Analog IC Signal Conditioning” at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg dealing with the design of the integrated analog circuits.
