Goal:
Analog-to-digital- (ADC) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC) form the link between sensors or control elements on one side and the digital controller on the other side. A variety of models are available that differ in speed, accuracy and power consumption. This seminar will give an overview of the parameters, ADC architectures and critical aspects in circuit design. ADCs can only achieve their full performance, if the connecting circuitry such as reference, input signal or supply is optimized for the operating conditions. These external circuit requirements are discussed. Finally, the pro and cons of the available DAC architectures are illustrated. The seminar can be extended with a discussion regarding ADC test.

Presenter:
Dr. Ohnhäuser studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg with focus on microelectronics and particularly data converters. He started his career at Burr-Brown Inc. in Tucson, USA, which specialized in high-performance integrated circuits, such as operational amplifiers or data converters. Mr. Ohnhäuser returned to Erlangen in 1999 to start a new R&D center for Burr-Brown., which he was leading until 2012. In the meantime, Burr-Brown got acquired by Texas Instruments in 2001. Within this time, Mr. Ohnhäuser received 12 patents regarding the circuit design of data converters, published more than 30 articles and was elected to Senior Member Technical Staff. He designed leading edge Folded Flash-, SAR- and Delta-Sigma ADCs, as well as String and R2R DACs. In parallel, he started a data converter class at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg in 2007, which he also held in 2009 and 2010 as guest lecturer in Klagenfurt, Austria. Since 2012, Dr. Ohnhäuser is leading eesy-ic GmbH as CEO and CTO in Nürnberg.
